When A Child Sees The World Differently

There is a moment that happens in almost every art workshop.

An adult walks into the room and notices the tables, the paint, the brushes and the activities prepared for the day.

A child walks into the very same room and notices something completely different.

The sunlight dancing across a cup of water. The tiny crack in a wooden table that suddenly becomes a river in their imagination. The shadow of a paintbrush stretching across the paper like a tree. A colour that reminds them of the sea they visited with their grandparents.

The same room. The same objects. Two completely different ways of seeing.

Children are not simply looking at the world.

They are constantly rebuilding it inside their imagination.

Long before they learn facts and definitions, they understand the world through stories, colours, movement and play.

Perhaps this is why creativity feels so natural during childhood. It is not something children need to learn. It is something they gradually risk losing.

Children Notice What Adults Forget

Adults often move through life with purpose. We are trying to finish work, answer messages, prepare meals or arrive somewhere on time. Efficiency becomes our habit.

Children live differently. They pause. They collect little treasures. They ask unexpected questions.

A leaf is never just a leaf. A puddle becomes an ocean. A cardboard box becomes a spaceship. An empty cup becomes a drum.

To adults these moments may appear insignificant. To children they are opportunities to build meaning.

Art education begins with observation before it begins with technique. When children draw, paint or sculpt, they are not only creating something new. They are paying closer attention. They begin to notice texture, patterns, light, movement, relationships between objects, emotions hidden inside colours.

These small discoveries become the foundation of creative thinking. Art slows children down just enough for them to truly see.

Imagination Is A Different Kind Of Intelligence

One of the questions adults ask children most often during art workshops is: "What is it?"

Children rarely ask this question.

Instead they say, "It could be..."

That small difference changes everything.

A blue circle can become the moon.

Or a turtle. Or a balloon. Or an island.

Or something that has never existed before.

Children naturally move between reality and imagination without needing permission.

This flexibility is one of the most valuable skills they possess. Creative thinking is not about producing unusual drawings. It is about learning to imagine alternatives.

To ask, "What else could this become?"

The ability to imagine different possibilities later becomes the ability to solve problems, adapt to change and approach unfamiliar situations with confidence.

Imagination is not separate from learning. It is one of its most powerful engines.
